It took me three days to cover this 16x26’ room in black polyethylene sheeting. When you walked into the room it is pretty much pitch black, except for the ambient light of the video coming from the middle of the room. At first, you barely notice there is black sheeting covering every surface, however there is an overwhelming smell of plastic and the feeling of the cold, crunchy material under your feet when you walk. If you stay in the room long enough, your eyes will adjust to the ambient light and you will be able to see the photographs on the walls around you.
My inspiration for this installation started back in January 2022 with my research into black holes. I became interested in creating a visual metaphor for the void inside ourselves we try to fill with material possessions to the actual physical manifestation of a black hole. This led me on a path of thinking about how to visualize something that is fundamentally invisible.
I thought a lot about this contradiction. It bled into my everyday life, and especially my time in the darkroom. I thought about darkness and light and the paradox that you need both in order for the chemical process of analog photography to create an image.
